Hamptone JFET love?

Post by curtiswyant » Wed Jan 11, 2006 11:08 am

Hey all, I'm thinking about buying the Hamptone jfet kit. I've got a 388/computer setup now that I'm pretty pleased with. However, I don't own nor have I ever used any standalone pres. I mostly do recording by myself so I think a nice pre would be lots of fun. Any suggestions?

then thats the one to get - you definitely get the most bang for the buck out of the hamptone, even if you pay scott to build it for you.

The Hamptone stuff is top notch, in my opinion. I have both kits actually and I could not be happier. It's versatile as hell....you can really get different sounds out of it depending on how you use the pads. Plus, the DI on the thing is notoriously good.

Bottom line....you can't go wrong and you won't want to sell it a year down the line.

It's killa. I love mine. But be warned, you'll start wanting to upgrade everything else in your studio. I rewired everything with balanced cable after getting it.

I want to make the tube one too...

FWIW, I'm a bigger fan of the tube. A little bigger sounding to me...amazing on drums!

i have never tried the jfet but i have the tube. what can i say. it makes any recording i make through it sound natural yet huge. acoustic guitars, vocals, anything i've ever tried it on. on a side note. i see alot of people talking of getting different sounds by using the pad. how do you guys go about doing this?

Sorry for the ambiguous "bigger" descriptive. The tube just seems to have a bigger frequency response...a more balanced sound top to bottom. The jfets I built are a little spike-y in the low-mids. The DI is the bomb.

i think they both sound pretty similar. My JFET breaks up a lot sooner and has more crunch. I had to ichange the pad value on the JFET cause it would overdrive too easilly with high output condensors.

The low end on the tube is more flattering. I use the tube for outside kick and bass amps as well as vocals. The JFET is great on electric guitars, snare, inside kick and toms.

Seriously though, you cannot go wrong with either purchase.

did anyone build their own? I'm thinking about getting the kit. Would it be possible to build for someone like me, who has little experience with this, but is reasonably good with directions?

Look at the Shinybox site and check out fum's Hamptone Tube with point to point wiring... not from a kit.

It's nice!

I've heard they're pretty easy, if you've built a fuzz face you'll be ok.

Ermmm, it is harder than a Fuzz Face by a long shot. But it is not hard. It took me nine hours, and I work very fast. But the parts are all large and the instructions are clear...and Scott is very helpful via email and on the phone.

i've never built anything and built the tube one. as long as you work slow and double check everything, you'll be fine.
