doves - some cities

Post by joninc » Thu Jan 12, 2006 8:14 pm

this band consistently amazes me with their production. very extreme for what is essentially pop music. great contrasts of gritty, distressed sounds and crystalline choruses and keys etc.. distorted drums and modulated pianos... also there some really nice dark vocals - see the storm - anybody recognize what sound that is (i would love to learn how to make a vocal sound like that).... these guys tend to get lumped in with brit pop but their stuff is way more sophisticated than the typical travis/coldplay types etc...

anyways - i am curious if anyone knows anything about how it was made ... (ie the process)

is it strictly analog or is there ptools manipulations going on??

did they work on it in lots of places like the last broadcast?

editing? tuning?

One of my favorite bands around right now, great record!!!

Ben Hillier produced it. (as well as the new Depeche Mode record which is also great)

I'd love to know more of the details myself...

Well the special edition of Some Cities comes with a 'making of the album' DVD. Now while there are no sections of the film where any one of them are saying, "I ran this mic through that compressor and it's hitting the tape blah blah blah" they do a lot of the actual recording themselves (always have done). They use a mix of analog(ue) and PC based recording. Minimal micing on the kit as well (single overheads for some tracks).

I would recommend watching the documentary if you get the chance. They also have another DVD they released shortly after Last Broadcast entitled 'Where We're Coming From' which I would imagine, since I've not yet seen it myself, has some footage of them in the studio.

But as with everyone else who's responded, yes, they are a phenomenal band that record fantastic songs with very intriguing sonics.

cool thanks for the info - i had no idea there was another edition of the record - i'll have to hunt it down.

does anyone know that vocal sound i am talking about - it's the drummer i think singing on the song THE STORM - it has a very dark sound. it's how i image a V72 would sound (i have never used on) on maybe some weird dynamic mic ... ahh the mystery!

Great live band as well. I saw them three times last year. (Would have been four if they hadn't cancelled Coachella)

Secret Machines had been hailed as "The New Pink Floyd".....

But I always thought the Doves if anyone were more deserved of that "honor"...
