Any big surprises at NAMM?

Post by i am monster face » Tue Jan 17, 2006 10:07 am

Tomorrow I'll be flying out to LA. Coincidentally, Namm will be happening at the same time. I'll be there friday.

As it is my first NAMM visit, what booths should I check out? I'm thinking Digi might be previewing the 003.

Does anyone know what new products I should be checking out?

I'm almost more excited about going to NAMM than my meeting that I'm actually going to LA for.

Where is everyone coming up with this 003 talk? Is it just wishful thinking or is there any substance to the rumors?

Try to talk to the Chinese microphone factories and perhaps we can put together another group buy on maybe something like tube microphones or large-diaphragm dynamics (RE-20 or SM-7 copies).

Wishful thinking.

I'm excited - I've never been to one before. Group buy on another microphone? I missed out on the ribbon buy and I don't know if I'm gonna be able to have the time to do something like that. But I'll definetly see if there is anything I can do.

Ask Paul Wolf how far along he is with his new compressor. That thing is gonna be ridiculous. I have a feeling it's going to make me very glad I waited before buying a 2500.

See what's up with Hafler, too. Like, are they DONE or what. I've got a new amp that I might need to have repaired and it's still under warranty.

Uh, ask Universal Audio to reissue the 610 preamp in console-ready channel strips, so I can custom make my goshdarn 610 console.

And my daughter needs a scholarship while you're at it.

I don't have the inside scoop, but don't expect a polyphonic other than a bank of RME Voyagers. Something along the lines of a Memorymoog just isn't worth the R&D in today's market.

That's why I'm going in the first place.

It just so happens that NAMM is at the same time.

Come on, tell me that wouldn't be the coolest thing.

The first ribbon mic happened because someone was at NAMM and a rep from the Chinese factory told a guy that he could order a small production run, minimum 100-units for $70 each. Naturally, the gear-slut side of him and the cheap-ass musician side of him clicked into action at the thought of a $70 ribbon. Ended up around $110 a piece in the end with shipping, taxes and a little extra for the broker, but it still happened.
Now think of that with a nice multi-pattern tube.
