Counter balanced Mic stands

Post by jayro_rockola » Fri Jan 20, 2006 8:16 am

Hey all,

I've decided that I need to get a couple of nice, heavy duty stands with counter balances. I have a few mics (tube and ribbon) that I'm just not trusting on the cheaper tripods anymore. Anyone know a good place to look these?

I just got a couple for drum overheads - $150 each - from Guitar Center. Haven't unpacked them yet but I'll be using them for a session this weekend. Not sure if they're counterbalanced but that's easily solved by a plastic grocery bag and some t-shirts.

The best low-cost booms are the QuikLok A-50 - big tripod stand with locking wheels, can reach about 8' high and 7' out, or close to 14' straight up, and they are sturdy. They also street for maybe $100-120 or so.

Ditto that. They work great for heavy mics.

$30 QuickLock Mic Stand + $2.50 5 lbs dumbells from wallmart on each leg.

$37.50 Haven't tipped one over yet... knock on wood. I've decided though sand bags would probably be more effective.

they're crazy expensive, but every time I put the ribbons on my shitty mic stands, I wish for a good old Matthews C-stand and some sandbags.

Ah, film gear... so robust...

Looking at those dumbells on the bases of the unipod (as opposed to tripod) mic stands... Those stands are a little prone to getting their threads stripped and coming loose in the base, in my experience and I'd think putting a weight on it will only strain it that much more when someone picks it up by the pole....
just sayin'...

These are in my basement 1 room home studio and they dont move often nor far.
They works for me but I can see yo point.
Tripods might be better for this trick.
Thanks! :D

's cool, you just gotta pick 'em up from the base, not the pole. I did the same thing on one of my unipods, but I used a big old workshop clamp. It helps a lot but man does it ever hurt when you stub your toe!

i got two large socks and 4 palm sized stones. i cut a whole in the top of the sock to hang on the back of the stand and put the stones in each sock and it counter weights the stands perfectly.

therefore, i gave my stands balls with long saggy nut sacks.
