dealing with stars

Every so often, I get to work with some one who has done very well for them self. I try to treat every one pretty much the same, but its easy to be a bit star struck sometimes.

PLEASE DONT TELL ME WHO YOU'VE DEALT WITH!!! No need for names!!! Its just some stars want to be treated as stars, and some as normal folk. How do you go about it, and on occasion, dealing with your own sense of awe. If you mention any names, I know you haven't read this post.

Stars are like anyone else, except that generally, more people know who they are. They can be assholes, they can be cool, they can be TOO cool in a good way or a bad way, they can be really aloof, they can be flightly, they can be soft-spoken, they can be boisterous, they can be brilliant, they can be really lucky, whatever. Some can be really down to earth and make you feel comfortable and want to be treated like a normal, nice person, others need the bowl with no brown M&Ms. Like anyone else, how I deal with someone who has a certain amount of "name recognition" depends on how they treat me or how they appear to want to be treated.

Obviously generalizations are worthless, but what I've noticed is that when people are "nobodies" or "really huge" they're pretty okay to deal with, it's the mid-level celebs or pseudo-celebs who are difficult, either because they're insecure that they're not as big as they feel they should be, or they think that's how "stars" are supposed to act.

It's that awkward in-between stage.

Of course, the "really huge" folks I've worked with have also been around for long periods of time and have kinda mellowed or matured...I don't usually work with anyone who just recently got immensely world-famous overnight.

YMMV.

Yes, I have to agree. Most of the A-listers are generally pretty easy to deal with. In my experience, its the brand new famous who have not really proved that they have staying power that can be difficult.

Hell yes...the in-betweeners...major celebs in their own minds. Major pains in the ass to everyone else.

The thing about being starstruck is you are removed from the reality of the individual and you are sucked into who you think everyone else in the world thinks that person is. The way I avoid this(and a couple of times it has been close to impossible) is I try to focus on the star's core personality, becoming super attentive to gathering data on what they like and dislike and what elements make up their personality so I can interact with them like I would an ordinary person that just asked you what time it was on the street. But take care not to look like the puppy that was waiting all day for you to come home from work. Eventually that facade pulls away and your reference point for these stars becomes unique and no longer that strange media-fed backdrop. Hopefully they can also create a memorable beacon for who you are and all interactions become more normal.
