Which Royer (121 or 122) For Use With Digi 002

Post by Double Tones » Sun Jan 22, 2006 10:48 pm

I am trying to get the best recorded guitar sound I can.
I will be getting an 002, and most likely a royer 121 or 122.
I am leaning toward the 122, because it's phantom powered and not as dependent on the mic pre, which is supposedly not very well liked on the 002...?

My main guitar rigs are a Gibson Les Paul Custom and an orange ad-30 halfstack and a vox ac-30 tbx. Also sometimes a mesa mark 1.

Whatcha think?

Thanks

I tried their whole line for a week or so and went with a pair of the 122's. Over time useing several different ribbons, they've been one of my favorite purchases in the last couple years and a decision I'm glad I went with. The reason they are less "pre dependent" is that you get about 13 db more out of it, so you can use pre's that don't have enough gain, or are too noisey when cranked. I don't think the 121 would be an issue with the 002 pre's as far as gain structure, but the fact that you are getting the boost at the SOURCE (the mic) means that you won't be boosting any noise you'll get from the tie lines, cables, etc... I've used the 122's and the SF12 with the Digi002 pre's, and they both sounded really good. As a bonus, you have the safety knowing if 48v gets sent to the wrong pins (assistant with sloppy patching, mis wired cables/ties, etc) you don't have to worry about mic damage. That's usually a non-issue, but it does come up time to time.

I think I might have posted an mp3 (for what that's worth) on gearslutz in the MP3 section (using the Digi002 pre's).
