Small but well built chord organ?

Post by Phiz » Mon Jan 23, 2006 12:05 pm

I have a friend who plays a cheap little chord organ in a band. It can't be tuned (which is problematic because there is also a harmonica) and it's very quiet and thus hard to mic up for live shows without feedback. He really likes the sound of his chord organ and won't consider using a synth or anything digital. Are there any non-toy like instruments that have this same sound but are better built? Unfortunately it has to quite mobile, so anything with permanently attached legs is out.

Just to be clear, he doesn't need chord buttons.

I found an Acetone organ for around $300.
It's heavish but portable...think Yo la Tengo.

Farfisa (Italy) made a great one. Good looking and sounding. I had one in tune for years. The only reason that it went out of tune was because I left it in a hot summer car for about 4 days. Just kooked about 10 cents flat. Broke my heart. But the farfisa air organ/chord organ is worth checking out.

I have a gretch air organ that completely rules.
Also the wurlitzer "portorgan."

I am actually selling the "portorgan" because the gretch is so good.
