GarageBand as live performance tool?

Post by takeout » Mon Feb 20, 2006 1:06 pm

I'm looking for a cheap way to run keyboards live. I have an M-Audio 40-something key controller. I like what GB does. Can GarageBand be made to work in this application? the real questions I have are:

1. What's the BARE MINIMUM iBook configuration I'd need in order to run this? I'm thinking of picking up one on Ebay as cheaply as possible for this express purpose.

2. Can a simple USB single-channel pre work for output to the PA?

Any headaches one could foresee? I don't need sequencing, or MIDI triggering - I need a fake Hammond, fake upright piano, and fake synth. Not much else.

Please advise.

I have never really tried out Garageband, but I really like using Reason, which could be used in a live setting. Only trick might be switching instruments midsong.

I'm not sure what the tech requirements for Garageband are (look at apple.com) but I believe Reason is pretty lean as long as you aren't using giant samples.

Yeah, but that requires buying Reason.
