I did a mono OH stereo and mono room thing this week that turned out great. The OH and mono room had a lot of the beef and the stereo room added a nice space.

Sorry I was not clearer. I had a Mono OH, a mono Room, and a stereo Room set up. So four mics, two mono and one stereo pair.

It made sense when I typed it I swear it did...

ha ok makes sense. just wondering what u use for each mic? I think id like to try something like this setup, get about 90% of the sound with my SM57, U195 and M160 mono then use a spaced pair small diaphram to spread the cymbals out a little bit.

This particular set-up was a U87 in figure-8 for the OH. The mono room, at snare height, about 4 feet away and pointing at the SD was a TOMB ribbon with a decent amount of EQ. The stereo room was a pair of Pro37R x/y about drummers chest height and6-7 feet from him. All went through my Neotek Elan's preamps.

Had great luck this weekend with a mono overhead, too, this weekend. Man, that mic could have been the whole drum sound.

It was nice have a 57 on the snare and Stapes SD cond. on the floor though. Basically the "three mic" thing, but with a 57 on snare instead of another sd condenser...

Kinda hard getting it balanced without just copying the mono track to another track and panning...which kinda feels like cheating. :?

fun stuff, though...so much less work!

I'm listening to a pop song that has mono drums, and remembered this thread. "Father and Daughter" by Paul Simon has mono drums and it works really well.

Father and Daughter

The song was in the Wild Thornberrys move and was nominated for an Oscar. It's also on his new album Surprise, on which he teamed up with Brian Eno and was mixed by Tchad Blake. If you haven't heard this album, you might want to; it's cool.

All my stuff is mono OH. Heck, it's 3 mics on the drums, period, and then usually bounced to a mono track, too. I only have 8 tracks so..

I've been warming to the idea of mono drums (though in this case from a drum machine), especially as it means I can compress them as a group via a buss and still keep one channel of my compressor free for something else.

Back to the top 40, I think almost everyone is still on the stereo overheads. I can however think of one exception off the top of my head, that being Coldplay's massively successful "parachutes" album, which has a fair amount of mono drums as I recall. Mono down the middle, but mono nonetheless.

Mono overhead/distance mic in a large room...yummy. Last recording I did had no overhead, just a mic 10' up and 20' away; one of the nicest sounds to hit my ears. That was the first time using only a mono distance mic. Then I got home with a small room 16x14x8 , but still a kmi overhead and a good amount of compression and reverb helped that out. Mono overheads from now on for me.

If anyone out there can open the second page of this thread would you be so kind as to copy and paste all the replies after mine into a new thread? :(

one mono overhead really glues things nicely.
