I was listening to the newest Jet album (yeah, I know...) and it sounds like there are a few songs with mono drums, although they certainly weren't going for a modern pop production, nor have they been all that popular it seems...

4040 is good. the 3060 is good if you want a sorta colored sound. the shure ksm 141 is really nice, that'd be my pick. a litte more than 300, but it's switchable cardioid/omni, really versatile. they make another one (dunno the model #) thats cardioid only, i think that's like $200-something.
