compressor for smashing mono drums

Post by luckybastard » Thu Mar 02, 2006 1:02 pm

i'm about to begin a project in the next couple of months where most of the drum sounds will be mono, smashed drums. i don't have more than 350 in my budget for a cheap, trashy compressor to do this with. i'm really interested in the eh black finger for this application. does anyone have any experience with this unit? what other compressors are you guys using for this application?

microlimiter does this well. and its like $35. so you will have over $300 in beer money.

I usually use a Focusrite Green Voicebox for this. So that doesn't help you. Sorry.

anyone ever run the microlimiter into itself? just thought of that....

shit, recently i ran a mono carbo mic drum track into a symetrix 501, lots of compression and limiting.. then to the microlimiter

quite noisy and amazing. but like i didnt think of THEN running into the other side of the microlimiter...

Any guitar effect compressor can do the trick too. E.g. MXR Dynacomp.

Sansamps are great for this too!

Shure LevelLoc

Anybody use the AT Mic Limiter?

one thing about the level loc, its got a slow release, so if your drums are modestly busy, it doesnt smash that much.

Running channel 1 into channel 2 on a pro vla can be fun.

There are good buys on Level Loc's at oblivious flea markets for $15. Otherwise you're looking at $500 on The 'Bay. Milwaukee knows; dbx 161's can be had for $350 and are FUCKING AMAZING! for mono over-heads. If I'm lying, I'm dying. Then there's the Altec 1591A. You'd probably need to have one re-capped, but they're sweet as crap. Holla.
