My go-to kick and snare pre-s for a little over a year have been the Sage electronics "SE-1" pre. Totally amazing transient response, class A, discrete "density" to the sounds. I use them for all kinds of stuff. Really well made, simple, great design.

Only commenting on pieces I've used or been around while being used:
RNP
2x EH 12ay7
ART MPA
maybe a couple of Meek VC6's, used
I think any of the above would do a servicable job.

I think that the RNP is one of the only preamps in that range that I'd want to use for kick and snare. Those other budget pres are usable... but, I'd probably get more use out of them on other sources.

If you're willing to solder, I bet the Hamptone JFET would be fun. It should distort in a good way.

Get one of the little 12-channel Topaz boards that pop up on ebay from time-to-time. The one with four mic inputs. Buy one of those and a couple of in-line barrel-type polarity reverse adapters and you'll be set. In my opinion, the best option for that type of dough.

I've used the RNP for kick and snare and it works. The other $500 and under pres I've owned just didn't do it for me - but the new EH is not something I've tried and everyone seems to love.
so what else do you have? The best thing about the RNP to me is that it can work anywhere, so if then someday a 2108 falls in your lap and you permanently hook it up to your kick and snare, the RNP will do fine things to your overheads (where I typically used mine.)

sx202 works well for kick snare if you are feeling cheap. $150 or so... although damn them for making a cool little kick snare box with a fucking 15db pad. swap a resistor or two and you can change that....

Here's a vote for the Vintech 1272, that amp just makes kick and snare JUMP out the speakers.

You have a Vintech for sale for $500 or less? Sweet! I'll take it if Billiam doesn't want it.
