geoff emerick's new book!

Post by hauser gabone » Sat Mar 18, 2006 1:51 pm

man, have i been waiting for this. im not sure if you guys/gals have heard about this, but its the memoirs of mr. emerick's days recording the beatles. i've read the first 20 pages, some stuff i have read a million other places..but some stuff i never knew about...i.e. geoff running ringos drums through a fairchild limiter, overloaded them to get a 'pumping' sound on purpose. ...
something i always heard in the record, but could never really identify.
so...good technical info, good stories, good engineer!

i've read too many beatle books. the worst being the white album book..
as for ken scott's comments, i have to wonder who, out of all these guys, is telling the truth when it comes to matters dealing with their egos. george martin didnt share the 'producing/engineering' spotlight, geoff disses george martin, ken disses geoff's book. i have a feeling there is more bullshit than we can imagine.
but, is there information i have never read anywhere else that is probably true and very interesting.
there seems to be a pissing match between ken and geoff.

Having lived with Mark Lewisohn's "Sessions" book for 14 years (and reading the damn thing cover to cover too many times), I'm sort of siding with Mr Ken Scott on this one. Some of the "mistakes" in Geoff Emerick's book are just unforgivable. I mean, recording "Blackbird" out in the open??? Did they even bother checking the session tapes? If his memory of one incident is so inaccurate, it sort of casts doubts over the veracity of the rest of these "recording memoirs".

*shakes head*

well..i did read the blackbird thing before i saw ken's comments, and i thought that was unusual. but, for the 10 or so errors/lies/etc. that he points out, there are dozens of interesting tricks and funny stories. i doubt he made the entire thing up....worth a read!

I just bought this book also. It's a pretty good read but I am too, like Ken Scott, getting slightly annoyed with all of the Harrison put downs. For most of the book it's great easy reading and light hearted and at other parts I just think it's very biased or nearsighted. Can't wait to keep reading though. And everyone be on the look out for "Recording The Beatles" Take my word for it, it's going to be unlike anything you've ever seen!!

I'm cool because I got to talk to Ken Scott for a couple hours last year. He's interesting. He came to my school (ohio university) and told us about how he dropped out of school when he was 14 and recorded magical mystery tour when he was 16. I wonder if he got paid still... damn i need to leave this school.
