Suggestions for an 17" or 19" LCD monitor?

Post by Theron D » Sat Mar 18, 2006 2:40 pm

I've switched over to a G4 12" Powerbook and need to get an external LCD monitor.....looking at Macmall for either a 17 or 19" ......suggestions much appreciated....for example dont really need one that has external speakers on the sides, not doing graphics so the refresh rates in not a biggie....just using for a DAW...

I like the viewsonic vX710's that I have... fairly inexpensive 17" and has both VGA and DVI inputs (which you'll have to get a mini-dvi to dvi adapter with your powerbook to use).

The Dell 1905FP LCDs look great and are really affordable. I bought 40 of them last year for work and a ton more for broadcast clients...

I just got a new one of those at work and they are excellent. I used to be a snob when it came to LCD monitors, but this is the first LCD I've used that really has a sharp image which rivals a CRT.

I just got one of these widescreen DELL UltraSharp 2005FPW monitors & it's great -- the same screen as the Apple 20" Cinema display for about $425 shipped. On the high side of $$$, maybe, but the high resolution & wide screen mean you can see a lot of what's going on, and the brightness makes the Logic interface feel less like a dungeon. Plus you can use monitor spanning so you can have even more windows open. Sorry to sound so much like a salesman -- I actually have no very warm feelings for Dell -- but I love this thing.

I got two of the earlier Del 2001fps and am very happy with them (I use them with Macs). FWIW, spouse's 20" Apple already has dead pixels, but my Dells are doing fine.

Cool thanks everone. Looks like the overall concensus is Dell. I hate Dell laptops (had them at work with tons of problems) but we do use Dell LCD monitors and they are very nice.

Thanks again for you input...

Apparently, the LCD's used in apple's monitors are the same as what is in the Dells. If Dell doesn't end up floating your boat, I've had a bit of luck with Samsung 912T's. I have about 70 of them at my day job, and after 6 months, none seem to have any dead pixels, and the color is pretty decent.

I've got a couple "Sceptre" 19" monitors (chosen for price point, pleasantly surprised with quality.)
Not so into them for graphic design purposes, but for audio work... just fine.
Check TigerDirect or GlobalComputer. Don't forget to check for rebates, too...

ok, I totally take back my prior post. I walked into work today, and one of the 912t's screwed.

I'm about to find out how good the warranty is on these things.

My suggestion? www.newegg.com and get whatever is cheapest. If the color is less than 100% accurate who cares. That's what I did and I got some Rosewill's and they have been just fine. I'd rather spend my money on other things.

I've used many LCD's at work, and settled on the Dell 1905FP and 1704FP, which I also use at home.

I suggest a 17" because it has the same max resolution as a 19" (I think) which means 1280x1024 wouldn't look as good on the 19 as the 17... Unless you're getting a widescreen or something. Who know's, thats just what I thought.
Go for a Samsung, or a dell.
