I record on an Otari MTR-90 MKIII always at 15ips.
If I'm recording at my house I have a TEAC 80-8 1/2" 8 track that only runs at 15 ips.

Sadly, I don't own a mixdown deck...yet.

About half the time I transfer the tracks to Cubase to mix with automation, but I don't use any plug-ins and I always mix through a console and use rack gear.

HA,

I once had a client say that if you could record on duct tape it would be perfect!

I'm an at-home recorder.

I used Cubase for about 3 years. This was enough to convince me to go analog. My complaints were with the process of digital recording, not with Cubase specifically.

Now I've got three JH 110 Cs -
A 1" 8 track that I'll run at 355/15 ips/IEC. I'll probably use G9 on the next record we do.
A 1/2" 2 track that I'll run at 30 ips/AES. Ditto on the tape.
A 1/4" 2 track that I got to use as parts for the other machines.

Including 2 new alignment tapes, this whole thing cost me about 4 grand. All the machines are in very good condition.

Again, I'm using this for my home studio. All of this takes up more room and costs more than my dual G4 running SX. There's no doubt in my mind that it's worth it.

i actually took a job at "sounds like" studios in roanoke virginia, and they're going to have an analog option. they are still acquiring equipment for that service though. i don't know what equipment will be brought in.

ill surely be asking questions like a mo-fo when they do get it in there though. get ready! haha!

i've been away from the analog domain since i got rid of the tascam portastudio back in the 90's. if that even counts...

see you fellas later! have a great day and try to get some sunshine in there somewhere!

tascam 388. i either fill eight tracks and dump to the computer, and do overdubs in the box, or i use the computer for external bouncing.

I don't bother with analog anymore. Most tape machines are old or out of calibration so they actually sound worse than a good modern digital system. Why bother.

i've been using a 1" atr-60 and bump down to a 1/4" jh-110a. i like both of these machines. the tascam is a real workhorse and actually sounds pretty good. These can be had for cheap and parts seem to be available, although, i've never needed to hunt for any.

1/2" 8 track Gotta love it

Post by audioboy6 » Tue Jul 04, 2006 5:44 pm

Still use my 1/2" 8 track revox for quit a few projects. using 456 at 15ips. Thinking about stepping up to 499. some times I'll use track 7 for SMTE to sync up to the computer for more tracks.

I'll be spinning 2" reels on my recently acquired MCI JH24 any day now, as soon as I can get Eddie Ciletti over to administer the post-shipping physical.

Haven't made any decisions on speed, tape, or level yet. Back in the 70"s I always tracked and mixed at 15IPS on Scotch 250. Much soldering needed to interface machine......

I also have a Sony/MCI 1/4" (or 1/2") machine.
