How many analog peeps left

Post by msmith4060 » Fri Apr 07, 2006 5:04 pm

After my last post, I was just wondering:
How many tape op peeps out there are still actually using tape regularly? Just for grins include your format, formulation, methodology, etc...
Me:
track 2" 24 to GP9 or 456(for color)
30 ips mostly
+6 NAB
mix in pro tools to:
1/4" 456 or GP9 at 30
+6
Is there anyone left(echos in empty room)
The other big red button, stupid...

I run a 2"-24 and lately I've been doing a lot at 15ips. I do kinda prefer 30 ips though. I mix to 1/4" 30ips and RADAR 24bit/88.2K simultaneously.

I just finished a record that is also going to come out on vinyl so I'm really glad it?s a full analog master.

I also just use the RADAR on some projects, or sometimes the RADAR and mix to 1/4".

Just got an otari 5050 mk3 1/2" 8-track about a month ago... haven't done any serious recording on it yet, as i'm knee deep in rebuilding my recording space. Once i do, the plan is to track to tape, dump to slow-tools, and mix thru a console, standard proceedure. I started out on an analog machine, and it just feels good to have one back in my space- an emotional thing, if anything...I also hope to get some sort of 1/4' mixdown deck in the future. I'm certainly not against digital recording, but it makes me feel i'm really recording when watching reels spinning away. I'm excited to get back into it.

MCI JH16 - mostly 499, mostly at 30ips
Studer A80-R 1/4" - mostly 499, 15ips

I don't know what qualifies as "regular" use. There has been more use of the machines by the clients lately, both tracking and mixdown. I try to use them as often as I can for my own stuff, or projects where I have some say in process. The way my friends and I work doesn't always lend itself to tracking on tape, but I try to always mix onto the 1/4".
I thought this club was for musicians. Who let the drummer in here??

MSR24s (and soon, Otari MTR90 MkII) for tracking, Ampex ATR800 for mixing.
Whatever formulation seems appropriate for the project, but usually 456 on the MSR, and 499 on the ATR800.

I do digital of for everything, too. Whatever works.

EDITed for clarity.

otari mx5050 mkiii 1/2" 8 for tracking drums, sometimes other stuff. Occasionally mix analog with a board. Recently bought a computer, so I'll be doing 99% of my mixing itb from now on.

I'm usually in the ProTools realm, however I do still do a lot with my Teac 80-8. I also recently got a Robert's 1630 1/4" tube two track for mixdown. The main studio I work in is shopping for a 1" 16 track right now which I'm very excited about.

I, a hobbyist, just grabbed up a cassette 4-track which I have been using a lot since I got it. It's a novelty after so many years of computer recording. Anyway, that's one more analog tracker out of the 4,000 of us.

i have been freelancing over the last year or so while getting my place set up, last few sessions tracking on studer 820, 3M 996, 15ips IEC/CCIR EQ. either mixed to studer A810 GP9 15ips NAB EQ or most recent was dumped to DP and is being mixed there right now. BUT, i *just* (installed this week) upgraded from my otari MX70 at home to an MTR90 mk III which i'm *super* excited about. i'm still in the midst of installing everything (totally new space) among about a million other things it seems.

my plans are to hopefully do basics elsewhere when possible and bring home for OD/mix. or smaller things everything can be here.... probably continue 15ips (i like the hiss and it's economical for my no-budget friends/bands/projects). if it can stay all on tape, do it that way or do it in conjunction w/DP. i'm excited to get some of this new RMGI stuff... at home i also have a studer A810 set up for GP9 15ips NAB EQ. the 2" at home is set to 996 right now from the sessions tracked elsewhere.

ooh. look at all the nerdy numbers!

yeah. against all rational notions i've invested a lot into tape.

but i also spent the afternoon mixing ITB and i can see the advantages for sure...

Studer A827 2" - 15ips CCIR GP9 overbias -3.75 db @ 10k

Studer A80 MKII 1/2" - 15 ips CCIR GP9 overbias -4.00 db @ 10k

I usually do +3/355nw (+6/250nw). I sometimes use 1/4" for the crunch and rolloff on the extreme bottom. Depends on the record. 100% of my records are tracked to tape and mixed to tape. On most, I use Pro Tools HD3 in between for budget/convenience/fixing. Blah blah.....
