guitar cab speaker buzzing..help!

Post by ryangobie » Tue Apr 11, 2006 4:32 pm

Ok, I plugged into my prized possesion, my 1969 marshall basketweave 8x10 and when I hit a low note I can hear a buzz coming from one of the old 10 watters. I yanked the back off ASAP but all the cones seem to be intact. what else should I be looking for. god i'm worried. this thing cost more than my car. and i sure like it more than that oldsmobile too.

Sounds like the voice coil is breaking up or swelling. Age/power you name it the wires eventualy start to seperate and cause the coil to rub on the magnet. Small pieces can also flake off and rattle. It is usualy more noticeable on smooth bass notes. If you push gently on the cone it should be smooth, compair it to the others. Their can also be a burnt spot or a spot where the voice coil is not getting a good connection.

Bottom line, if the other speakers sound good, you probably need a new one or a recone.
