MIC STANDS: which ones and where to buy

Post by jcooke » Tue Apr 25, 2006 8:17 pm

I need to buy stands to record a drumset. I'm going to have 2 overheads, one condenser, one kick mic, and one snare mic.

What stands should I get? I don't want cheap and crappy, but I'm not looking to break the bank either. Suggestions please.

P.S. I searched the message board and didn't see too many posts on this topic.

K&M gets my vote. Harder to find than the cheaper chinese crap in many stores... reasonably priced for the excellent quality! Distributed in the US by Ultimate Support, so any place that carries US can get the K&M

Tama actually makes some kick ass mic stands for rather affordable.

They are built like a tank IMO. I have quite a few. Great bushings and connectors.

is it weird that you can get full-size boom stands for a lot less than the shorter ones? I'm thinking of getting a hacksaw and cutting down a couple of my full size stands.

Also those tama stands look awesome

I will second the tama. You can get the whole set of 5 for cheap and they work great. By far and away the best of the "inexpensive boom" stands I have tried.

My bad, I looked for the link but couldn't find it. Musicians Friend used to sell a five pack with three tall stands and two short and it was a great deal.

K&M are great, but I think AKG took over. Same stands, super sturdy and rugged, and they wont budge. Check out Full Compass even though they gave some of the worst service ever, I got a great deal on these mic stands there, and I know others are typically happy with their service.

here are some model numbers and their description:

KM210/9-BLACK
Stand/Boom (standard size with telescoping boom arm)

KM259-BLACK
16.8"-25.6"Stand,18.6"-30.7Bom (short for snare or gtr amp, telescoping boom)

KM259/5-BLACK
15" Stand w/16-28.5"Boom Arm (really short for kick drums, telescoping boom)

These are worth the money. You're looking at about $70 for the standard and short, and about 60 for the very short.

Michael,
Thanks for the post. That is what I was hoping for. What to buy, where to buy it, and how much. Thanks also to others and their info.

AKG and Ultimate support are the two distributors of K&M. Nobody took over anything except the distribution. We are talking about the same thing! What did you pay for them? I got the tall and short for $64.95 each from audiogear.com in Seattle... I ordered four of each so I will have spares on hand for my live rig!

Yeah, I remember now that AKG and K&M are in fact the same thing, diferent distribution.

I bought several other items frrom FC so they threw in a couple regular stands for free, so it came to be like 50/stand.
