repost: mx5050 not recording on one track.

Post by jmpizzoferrato » Sun May 14, 2006 7:57 pm

i have one of the mx5050s in two pieces.. one for modules, one for the transport. it sounds great and works like a charm but track 8 isn't recording properly.

it sounds like a very tiny amount is getting to the track but not erasing or recording anywhere near a nominal level. the input level is fine but the output is is almost inaudible.

any ideas what this could be?

I vaguely recall the two-piece systems had individual head cables going from the transport to the audio electronics. Swap head cables around so that electronics #8 is connected to another head, and plug in another set of head cables into electonics #8. See if the problem shifts, or sticks with electronics #8.

so i put the cable for recording onto track 7/8 into the track 5/6 plug. it showed the same problem. track 7 worked just three days ago so my guess is that perhaps the cable needs to be looked at. i tried 'jiggling' the cables and there's nothing still. i'm hoping it isnt electronics. it's really frustrating that i have an amazing sounding/working 1/2" 6 track right now! esspecially because i'm trying to work on a real record with it.

I am NOT exactly following "what was swapped".

I'm a simple-minded fella LOL. I have to keep careful notes sometimes as I move things around!

Please carefully detail/list what was moved from "point A to point B".

brian..
sorry.. i think typed that after a 12 hour day. my fault. it doesnt make sense.

there are two sets of four plugs that go from the module to the transport; rec/erase 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 and playback 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8.

i took the record 7/8 plug and put it into record 5/6 to see if it would record on track 5 instead of 7. follow me?

it didnt record which lead me to believe that the problem does NOT lie within the leads but in the electronics or cables. yes?

hope that makes sense. anyway.. i'm off to the 6 track studio.

I have the same deck. From your description, it seems the problem is in the electronics box and not the transport.

It sounds like it could be a bad cable. I don't have a schematic (would really like to get one!), but could it possibly be a faulty relay in there?

Swap all sets of head cables...record/erase and repro. That way you are moving everything at once.

I think that makes sense to me <g>.
