Anybody have one? How's it compare to an SM7?

It's awesome on kick, and has worked well for me on guitar. I'm mainly doing live in the room stuff and leaving it on kick. I'll also use it on a lot of vocalists who like to hold the mic or don't sound good with my se2200a.
Really good low end and a good up front sound I suppose is how I would describe it.
I really want a PR-30 as well.

I just checked out Heil's site and I saw that Art Bell uses them! His show is so nuts. His endorsement alone might be enough for me to get this mic.

The PR-30 webpage, or if you look it up on ebay, you'll see a Quote by Joe Baressi, "The PR-30 is the best mic I've used in 5 years." Also a good endorsement.
I think the 30 is mainly the same mic with a low end roll off. I went with the 40 mainly for kick, but now that I've heard it's versitility I want a 30 for guitars and such. I would probably go with that one if you don't plan to use it on kick or bass, but who knows.

Actually the PR30 uses a completely different element. It is a larger diaphram (1 1/2" as opposed to 1 3/8" on the PR40) and is shockmounted inside. It has a different midrange characteristic than the 40. And you are right, the 40 has extended low end. The 30 is very smooth in the mids, which is why Joe was such a fan of it on guitar.FNM wrote:The PR-30 webpage, or if you look it up on ebay, you'll see a Quote by Joe Baressi, "The PR-30 is the best mic I've used in 5 years." Flood also gave us a quote on the PR40 "It puts the bottom end back into dynamic microphones"
and so did Alan Moulder ?It must be the most versatile dynamic mic I have come across. I have used it on hihat, vocals, bass, kick, and guitar all with great results"
They are using them on the Killers new record (PR40 on vocals, 30 on guitars, 20 on snare among other things)
