tape machine maintenance supplies??

Post by herodotus » Sun May 21, 2006 3:12 pm

I have just inherited an old deck and was wondering where to buy things like head demagetizers, head cleaning solution, capstan oil, syringes, etc.

Are there any online suppliers that you folks know of?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The best head demagnetiizers are Handi-Mags by the RB Annis Co. Of course 99% isopropol alcohol is the best for heads but If you don't tell anyone, I'll tell you I've used rubbing alcohol on the tape heads of my personal machines for years with no ill effects. I just wipe them down after the alcohol evaporates. In fact, I used to use Vodka at gigs for my Echoplex heads! As far as syringes, you can get them at hobby shops, or electronic shops. I suggest using light machine oil for any lubrication needs, unless the application specifically calls for grease instead. I don't know of any "one stop shop" for all these things.

www.usrecordingmedia.com might work as a one stop shop for your maintenance needs. You might pay a premium though.

Fry's Electronics has 99% isopropyl alcohol, fancy cotton swaps, lubricants, and electrical contact cleaner.
