"The Coles provides the great rejection because of the Fig. 8 pattern. "
Could you elaborate on that a bit?
It seems instinctual to me that a cardiod over the drums is going to reject better than a figure-8, and that the figure-8 would grab a lot of sound coming from the ceiling above the kit....
But man, the results sure speak otherwise....

a figure eight has a very tight pickup patter directly in front and directly behind it. Both the front and back lobes are significantly more directional than a cardiod microphone, which generaly has a pretty wide lobe in the front and picks up a lot from the sides. Overall, a figure of eight microphone has more rejection than a cardiod, in most circumstances.

Figure 8's also have a unique ability to reject sounds that originate from far away. By the time the sound wave gets to the mic, it is pretty much a planar wave. So the difference between the pressure exerted on the front of the diaphragm as compared to the back of the diaphragm is negligible. Therefore, very little sound is actually picked up because the diaphragm is more or less in equilibrium.
This is my best guess as to why that fellow was able to track guitar, bass, and drums together with very little bleed of the guitar and bass into his Coles drum OH. There was probably a good deal of distance between the drums and the guitar/bass cabs. As he said, though, the placement must be right. If one side of the mic is getting a big reflection off of something, you probably won't get quite as much rejection, for instance.

When The Levee Breaks
There were indeed M160's.(Tape No. 39 Jan/Feb '04)
Because I want the figure 8 pattern I will go with the M130s. Thanks to everyone for their input. Now feel free to discuss the Royers!
