Brian, question about my Studer A807

Post by Everybody's X » Thu Jun 01, 2006 6:58 pm

What does it mean if, when I power up my Studer, I have to spin the reels manually to get it going. As soon as I do this it's fine until the next time i turn it off

I'm betting it's expensive

Not that familar with the 807. Perhaps you can get some suggestions from the guys on the Studer list at Recordist.com.

Well Dave, I'm olde enough that "please", "thank you", and probably "sir" and "ma'am" are part of my vocabulary as well! I also will hold the door open for a female as well....

I haven't seen your question appear on the Studer email list yet, but the moderator is kind of slow approving new members/posts.

Thank you, kind sir! And, Best Regards,

Yeah I need to get over there.

I figured out that the tape tensioner thingie (that's the technical term  )
the first pulley that the tape goes around accuates the motors, so if the reel isn't pulling that tensioner upwards it will not start. If I lift it up it works fine and will continue to do so until I power the machine off again or change the tape. So now it appears to be more of a PITA than a major problem.

Now next question, oh knowledgable one, where can I find old-style mutisection capacitors with two leads coming off one end and a ground coming out of the other? (paper and oil, with a wax-ish cap on each end)
20mf/20mf/ground 400v

I need four of them to revive my Viking mic pres, I went to the electronic supply store in KC that services everybody/everything and the guy told me he hadn't seen those since the 50's

Now I am envisioning some crazy outboard contraption with some good ol' marshall style can caps to feed into the back or the preamps, if I can't find the style/layout of the originals
Save me from myself!

Antique Electronic Supply has a dual section axial lead electrolytic that should work. It is 33/33 @ 450v. Part # is c-em33-33-450. Their URL is www.tubesandmore.com.

Or, just substitute a pair of axial leaded caps with the same values as each section.

Newer caps are MUCH smaller than the vintage ones, so a pair of them should fit into the same chassis space.
