I've been seeing a lot of RME-class litepipe converters on Craigslist lately. If your budget was closer to 5-600 there are some really solid converters available. 2-ch and 8-ch...

I bought my RME new (about 6 years ago now) to expand/improve my 001 experience, and while I moved on to new computers and DAWs, I've kept these converters and still use them.

I'm not sure how the really low-end stuff can be predictably better than the 001. Although I suspect there are those who currently swear by their behringers.
