Two quick patchbay wiring questions

Post by FollowTheMusic » Fri Jun 16, 2006 11:21 am

Both referring to ADC punchdown-style rear panel:

1) When half-normalling, you need two conductors connected to one punchdown terminal. Can I just lay both wires over the terminal and punch them both down simultaneously? Or should I do one then the other?

2) For normalling, ground bussing, etc. are people just using wire, as opposed to an actual shielded cable? For example, let's say I'm half-normalling, T-TN, R-RN. Can I just run two wires to the normals or should I use another two-conductor cable (and do what with the shield)? Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for any help!

I punch them one at a time but I'm a little too careful sometimes. If it works, do it two at a time.

I use single wire not shielded. Never had a problem...

Lew... is right...

Some bays one @ a time works better, some bays like them twisted and punch it's all preferece and what has a better cleaner and long lasting result.

As for the normalling jumpers. I keep in stock 3" pre stripped pre tinned wires that work excellent. Never had a problem in all the bays we have built.

Best of luck any other bays questions let me know.

8) By the way, if you don't have a good wire stripper - invest in one. It will save you time and fingers... Here is an example. yea, it is expensive. Try one, you'll like it. http://tinyurl.com/rrxo3

I've found that with ADC punchdown bays, it's better to punch one at a time... but this could be wire-dependent. Try it with your wire and go with what feels best.

I don't recall ever needing a wire stripper for ADC bays. I used unstripped, single wires to do the normalling.
