protools with motu 896 ??? i'm confused...

Post by imsodasad » Mon Jul 10, 2006 12:30 pm

so what AD/DA interfaces go together with protools again....!?

i think i've managed to find out the ProTools LE version only works with digidesign hardware (mbox, digi 002r etc...)
but here i am with my trusty motu 896 (8xin, 8xout, monitor etc.. firewire interface) - almost about to buy a macbook and run protools.

but what edition of protools should i go for?
the M-powered? the LE7? what?

the motu 896 have drivers that are for a Mac. but i'm still confused...
does the 896 even go together with protools???

MOTU interfaces don't work with ProTools. Only Digidesign and M-Audio interfaces can work with ProTools. M-Audio interfaces require a special version of ProTools called "M-Powered".

you may sometimes read about people using an 896 with protools, so I'll clarify. you have to have a digi/m-audio unit to use protools. a number of those units come with an adat lightpipe connector as well as analog connectors. Some people use the 896 to add 8 more AD/DA to their digi/m-audio hardware via lightpipe. for instance, the digi002 has 8 AD/DAs. Adding the 896 to the setup you can have 16 AD/DAs.

and you can actually record 8 new individuel inputs via the lightpipe?
it's not just ONE BIG signal coming through in stereo or mono (like a master-out on a console)?

Right, ADAT can carry 8 mono signals.

Keep in mind that while the 002 and 002R can record at 96K, the lightpipe connection is only available at 48K. So you can have 8 at 96K and 16 at 48K by using the MOTU via lightpipe.

yes, you can record them as 16 separate tracks. 8 mics through the 002 and 8 mics through the MOTU which then plugs into the 002 via lightpipe.

very true but don't let that bother you - 48 is fine. they will both do 24bit and that's probably all you need to care about.

or you could keep your 896 and run cubase or nuendo or samp or 800 other fine DAWs that dont require proprietary hardware

actually i think i'll try Parallel Desktop out first, to see if the PC DAW i usually work in runs that much slower (SAWStudio).
it shouldn't really. since SAW bypasses the Windows GUI (or whatnot...).
