for good distortion that can cover most of the bases, i would go with a Rat, especially the 80s ones with the LM308 (opamp) chip.

for over the top insanity, try a Danelectro Fabtone.

you just can't turn the tone knob up past 12:00... not too much gain... great straight-ahead rock sound.

plus, hey, it's orange. and you can find them fuckin' ANYWHERE.

I love my DS-1, but I'm not really a guitar player, I just play one in the studio sometimes. DS-1 and a TS-9 (that's the one with the HOT switch, right?) are pretty much my go to pedals for everything.

Wait...I have a Rat too. That's neat if you need swoopy stuff that won't sound all fretty in the low end. Low E slides and even octaves down there for that indie thing. Foo Fighters swoops...does that make sense? I don't think that it's all purpose though, but what is?

I second and third and even fourth the Boss DS-1. There are tons of mods for them and you can pick them up for 30 bucks. You can turn them into a fuzz box or a gnarly distortion or a bass overdrive pedal or whatever. Get three for less than $100, grab your soldering iron, and start googlin'!

i can second the DS-1 and the tan (made in Kansas) Ross Distortion, which is really more of a nice crunchy overdrive IMO.

my DS-1 isn't so great through a toppy amp like a Twin, but sounds good through a blackface Princeton or a Valve Junior...and i totally agree about not putting the tone knob past noon!

Somebody on here turned me on to the discontinued Boss SD-2 dual overdrive. I got one for $45 and I love it. I use one channel for some clean gain into my tube amp and the other for solos...the "regular" OD on channel one is also excellent.

A good boost pedal is pretty handy in the studio, as well.

I often like the sound of boost pedal over an overdrive, especailly on old fenders and vox's and whatnot.

Wow. Those sound samples are interesting. Really creamy sounding to punchy bassy sound and some interesting overdrive.

I bet that that is the exact same pedal as the DOD Juice Box. Which is also a superb OD/boost, in my opinion.
