descent lower cost audio transformers?

Post by earl parameter » Tue Jul 18, 2006 3:25 am

we all know jensen, cinemag and lundahl are nice but i can't afford to experiment with them so is there something that's "not bad" for under like 15-20$ maybe some 10kct-10kct for various things and others for mic pre's. stuff like that.

10K CT for a mic preamp? hmmm...sounds more like a line input transfomer.

What is the exact application???

I've experimented with their 600:600 version, but here are a couple of 10K units from Edcor:

thanks brian. i noticed those after uk03878 pointed them out. do you have anything to say about their sound at all. if its colored or murky or transparent. what did you use them for?

i'm interested in hearing the OEP's but it seems the only way to get them is via import here

http://export.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSea ... =gensearch

i might give it a shot, but i'm not quite sure how much of a hassle shipping will be. maybe i'll just hang out on ebay for older stuff, also get a few edcors to try out.

A couple of other options to check into:

Mouser carry the little Xicon transformers for a couple bucks each. They're definitely colored, and cheap enough the fiddle with. There's nothing specifically good as a mic input trafo, but you can turn some of them backwards if you need a step-up.

Any surplus shop will have 600:600 telephone transformers, worth fiddling with, also.

There are also some reasonable signal transformers from Triad and Tamura around. 600:600 and 10K:10K are available. I've used the Triad 300:300:300:300 in several applications with no problems. It can be wired 150:600 for playing with on the front of a mic pre.

If course, for under $10 each, none of these will be sheilded for use as mic input transformers.

I've only messed with them on the test bench. However, they spec out quite well on that basis so I think they won't be too bad in an audio path.

They are cheap enough to just buy one or two and experiment!

i have some of the Xicon. they were like $1.50 pretty badass really. if you pound them they break up in usable way but i was looking for something a little cleaner. i've seen the triad name a couple times maybe i'll check them out. maybe try the telephone / modem trannies too. but i think i'll end up with some of the edcors, and trying to get some of those OEP's.

thanks everyone.

The UTC "Ouncer" series, e.g. 0-1, 0-8, 0-12, etc. show up on eBay fairly regularly for $10 or so. Here's a pair right now. Very colored and pretty cool-souding, in the right applications. Common characteristics among the lot are subtle low end rolloff, forward midrange, easy to overload. They've been used in some classic gear, as you may know. This page should help you pick the ones you want.

Thanks for that nice color scan of the UTC catalog page.

I just used O-16 in front of my Hampton-design JFET pre. Sounds amazing, and it was $20.

You definitely need to look at the frequency response graphs to get an idea of the zobel network needed to flatten them out. See VacuumBrain.

what about hammond transformers? they're decently cheap, especially from angela.com; they have all sorts of line, mic, and various other transformers.

You can get the OEP transformers through Newark Electronics (www.newark.com). They don't stock them, but they can get them for you.
