I heard that the Flaming Lips had a hour long discussion on what album had the best handclaps. I vote T-Rex, anybody know what the first handclaps on a record was.

i don't like steve miller too much, but "Take the money and run" has those signature bursts of hand claps.

I like the handclaps on David Bowie's Golden Years. The Who's Who Are You is also great especially if you see them do it in the studio on the Kids are Alright.

Visconti gets the best hand clap sounds... all the T-rex stuff, bowie stuff... the hand claps are always rocking. I got this rad little compressor that makes claps explode. Ilike it.

There's a track on Colossal Head by Los Lobos that has one guy doing a single hand-clap on one of the tunes....
Brings a smile to my face every time I hear it....

What's with handclaps lately? I did some last week and the band coming in this weekend was wondering what songs I thought claps would be good on.
As another cool example "Bombaleo" by the Gypsy Kings is super cool. Its two groups one group doing3 and & the other doing E and As.

clearly the best handclaps belong to The Coug' as recorded in 'Jack and Diane" or "Small Town" or some shit like that. The quintessential handclap.

Oddly enough last week I recorded a country artist that insisted I use the hand claps from my Electribe R drum machine instead of recording real hand claps on his album. He even brought in the new Cash album where they used drum machine claps on one of the songs to show me what he wanted.

I'm partial to the diminutive claps on Steelers Wheel's "Stuck in the middle with you". Just something about that groove. Small claps, so perfectly hidden in the mix (Hear Orson Welles' voice speaking of peas...).
Best,

"Harvest For THe World" by isley brothers
clap tracks that are the sloppiest are the coolest. The more "diffuse" the claps. the better they sound when you're stoned.
