Tonal differences in Royers

Post by jjbohn » Mon Jul 24, 2006 6:50 am

Is there any differences in sound between the Royer 121 and 122? I know there is a significant difference in the 122's ability to handle sound pressure but is that it?

They sound the same except the 122 has more gain. I put them side by side and gain staged them so they were both the same level and couldn't tell the diff.... now I'm not mr golden ears mastering engineer type guy who can hear the diff between this wire and that little thingy or whatever, but I think you can assume they are the same except for the 122 has more output.
They make other mics with thinner ribbons that do sound different, but the 122 and 121 sound the same to me.

Hi guys. I'm far from an expert, but I have asked one this exact question. A very well reputed producer at Tape Op mentioned that the 121 can be more "tuned". I guess because the level is lower and the pre has more to say regarding what it sonds like. I hope that helps.
