Sennheiser 441 on snare: question

Post by Mark67 » Tue Jul 25, 2006 9:21 am

Engage the treble boost switch or no? Do you have a preference?

We will also be mic'ing the bottom of the snare with an SM 57.

The problem for us is that we track and record in the same hall, so our ability to monitor and compare sound is somewhat compromised.

i think the one time i used a 441 on snare we liked it better with the boost on. but just have the drummer play for 2 minutes and flip the switch halfway through and compare.

Usually off, sometimes on.

Depends. If we want the little bit of extra air & crack the switch goes on before any kind of EQ.

Rather then using two mics, try pulling the 441 about 4-6" off the side of the snare...aimed either at the shell or the top rim.

i always keep it flat, and that's worked great for me. my favorite mic for snare drums.

i just used one on my last session. EQ flat, with the mic about 4" back from the top rim and a AKG 451 on the bottom.
Sounded great.

I use it on the snare bottom all the time, and I keep it flat.

Thanks everyone, very helpful!

We wound up using the boost. I like that detailed high end on a snare, and I'm used to dialing that in with EQ when we use a 57 (and/or finding it in the overheads' pickup). We tried the set up a bit further back but it kind of became target practice for our man's sticks, so we kept in in a traditional close position. What a great, great microphone! Our drummer heard the difference from a 57 right away. We LOVED it on snare. I'm going to try the 441 on an AC30 and vocals next.

Well, that does it, I'm gonna have to try the 441 on snare next tracking session. What type of sound do you get out of it?

I've yet to find something that the 441 just outright sucks on.

What a magical microphone...

the awesome kind.. haha. seriously. sounds really big and detailed. great attack, and has really good off-axis rejection, so you're not getting tons of hi-hat in the signal.

it really sounds like the drum, rather than the "mic's interpretation" of the drum. if that makes any sense.

441 is a great mic. I never tried it on snare but I put it on overhead, rolled off everything below 2K, and wow were those cymbals crisp. I also like the 441 on my voice. Very versatile mic.

i love the 441. but i would put in on the bottom and the 57 on top. just my opinion, but i think that the tighter patter of the 441 on the bottom gets a really nice focused sound of the snares that i find particularly useful. and a 57 on the top? hell 80% of recorded music probably has a 57 on snare. okay that's probably not quite true, but it's more than 50% i'm sure.
