Well, yes. I meant the former not the latter. That's why I used the quotes. I should have referenced "switches".

Jensen speakers - $15 for the pair. Goodwill.
Altec Speakers (old) $10 for the pair. Salvation Army.
Aphex Aural exciter - $1. Garage sale.
Hammond organ - $50. Goodwill.
Baldwin Organ - $0 - outside somebody's house.
Handmade Italian classical guitar. No marking... just says "handmade in Italy" on the inside. $10 - Antique Furniture Store.
Oberheim drum machine - Free from a trashcan in Westwood. (Ok, it was next to the trashcan. It worked, and still does work perfectly.

Oh god, even more crap. I love thrift stores.

I just bought a drum set off a guy on another board... he didn't know what they were because he had refinished 5 of the six drums (only one was intact and I guess he can't read a badge)... I ended up with what I though was going to be a POS 6-piece for $120 but I just wanted something to practice on w/o having to tear down and setup my gig kit every time... WHAT I ENDED UP WITH was a 6-piece Slingerland kit from somewhere between '63 and '66 according to badge/serial... HA! I WIN!

This kid was using this in a hardcore band... I feel so bad they've been abused for SO long...

I'm only using four of these drums, so if anyone needs two 12 inch toms... offers are accepted (one is intact, one is refinished)

Today I scored a working Tascam 488 for $60 at the local Savers. It's not an MKii, so maybe it's only worth $80 or $100, but I am stoked nonetheless.

nearly everything I own is a cheap find! My Moog Opus 3 with road case ($180) and the Jen-1001 for $100 are some of the most used finds. Not so many treasures around anymore. Back in the 90's I had a pal who worked at the Pawn and would ask me "how much do you want to pay"... got some screaming deals. My 50's Tweed Fender Champ was $65... very clean one too.

I just picked up a good-as-new Bluebird mic from a guy on Craigslist for $350. Now my vocals sound so good I won't have to eat for a couple of weeks! I also got a Niles "audiophile speaker selector" for like $5 at Savers that has allowed me to get rid of an entire amplifier, a RatShack switcher box and quite a bit of cable.

Oh, and my sis rescued a dead 21" LCD from a guy who was going to throw it off a roof. I replaced two swollen caps and the dang thing is good as new. That's a savings of over $398... thanks sis! Of course, it feels good to get rid of those 2 17" CRT's that were messing up my stereo image and threatening to snap my desk in half with their massive weight.

My engineer just got an 80's 50W JCM800 white tolex anniversary model, broken, for 100 bucks.
He might have a real gem as this one is 50 watts, 2 channel w/ reverb. It might be kind of rare (250 made???) as it is only 50W with two channels and verb. If anyone has any info please let me know!! Needless to say he's pretty excited! And I have a new amp in the studio!!!!

I just got a Shure 777 crystal mic with cable for 3$ with cable (which also fits my EV V1a ribbon mic)!! The cable was the score...

I got a silvertone 15W amp and some Utah home stereo speakers that I made into a little half stack which sounds kind of cool! Another thrift store find...50 dollar investment (30 of it for a new output tranny!)

I'm listening to some KLH model 17's that I got for 6 bucks right now. They sound pretty good hooked up to my McIntosh MC225.....(Little Feat!!)

I picked up some klipsch KLF30's at a pawn shop awhile back for 170$ These are in the lounge at the studio hooked up to a Hafler amp and a thrift store turntable (pioneer direct drive, 15 dollars). I was thinking of setting up a small mastering area at the studio but have lost interest and these would not have been good speakers for that anyway..

Others,

Dynaco ST70 amp that did not smoke when I turned it on......$8
2 Dynaco PAT4 preamps that I sold as-is on ebay for 50$ each...Paid $8/EA
Bontempi reed organ.....2 bucks!
Neumann U47......50 bucks at Salvation Army..........Just kidding!...(but I'm looking!)
Good Luck At Any Cost

Sennheiser 421 (70's) $10
2 shure SM7 $40
Fender tweed Harvard (1957) 400
1974 Les paul deluxe gold top traded a DA38 for it!!
1964 Ludwig drum kit, w/ cymbals, snare stands, extra 13" tom AND cases $300
1964 ringo finish 22, 13, 16 umm all original, free.....

I bought a Hohner String Performer Analog string synth for $45 dollars at a thrift store and as I was lugging it to the train I stopped at a yard sale and bought a Otari 5050 2 track R2R for $40. I shit you not. within 10 minutes of each other. Also about a year previous, I bought a Yamaha dual manual organ (with bass pedals) because the cord had been cut in half for $15. Other than that it is in like new condition. It was like a buck to fix. $10 first generation Electric Mistress at a pawn shop.

I think I've replied to this before, but it's getting so long, I can't remember. As others have said before, I get everything used/cheap from pawn shops. Some of the highlights:

84 Martin D18V - mint w/ case (only 54 made that yr) $155
56 Les Paul Jr - $140
54 Fender Deluxe Tweed amp - $40
Roland 808 drum machine - $75
Beyer M500 - $10
MD421 - pair for $75

Too many other guitars, drums and stuff like that.

The only true great mic on this planet is the Shure SM-57. It is the most consistant in not totally sucking of anything ever built. All other mics are "application dependant".
