What's your oldest piece of gear?

Post by junkstar » Fri Aug 04, 2006 7:22 am

What's your oldest piece of gear that works and is something you use every now and then?

Mine, an original Alesis Microverb from sometime in the 80's, or an SM-81 that I bought from Waterfront Studios in Hoboken when they closed that I have no idea the age of... I do know it was used on the first 5 Lenny Kravitz albums though and it seems to show signs of serious use to boot...

My first guitar cable (bought in 1987). Still gets used.

The oldest piece of gear...

Maybe the collins 26W limiter (i think it is roughly circa 1950-ish )

Or the U47. Maybe the tannoy ribbon. I dont know.

One I have owned the longest? I think a Dbx 160X, as it was the first compressor I
ever personally owned, from 1980's-something or other.

Hard to say, at least for traditional "gear". Probably the UA1108 modules in the BAE rack I have. They're labled Universal Audio not UREI, so...mid '60s on those? I think Mr. Putnam changed the name in '66...

I have a pretty old EMT 140TS as well, with a pair of the mono V54 tube amps. Probably the same time frame as the 1108's. I bet my Altec 165's aren't much newer.

The oldest thing in the studio is easily the Weaver parlor pump organ. It predates WWI by a few years. Totally rebuilt that beast about 3 years ago, and it is an absolute joy to play and record. Our Hamilton/Baldwin upright is from the early '30s, and the Hammond S-1 chord organ is a pretty damn old...
I thought this club was for musicians. Who let the drummer in here??

If you're talking age of the gear itself, it's probably my Kalamazoo Model 2. I also have my dad's AR-3a speakers, and Sony open reel tape machine (circa 1970- second major purchase after immigrating to the US after a Super Beetle).

I am going to have to guess a little. I think the absolute oldest I have currently is my 1971 Fender Twin reverb. Then would be my MCI JH16-24 followed by a 1983 Squire Strat.and a I a Dunlop Cry baby from the 80s. I also have an EV 660 mic and an Ashly CL-52 compressor that I'm not sure of the age on. This is a great topic BTW.

The oldest piece of gear I own would be a pair of Gefell M582 tube mics. I am guessing they are from the early 70's or late 60's. I use them all the time.
I know enough to know that I don't know what I am doing.

I have a 1926 Deagan xylorimba that probably tops out my collection. I have a bunch of stuff from the mid sixties (drums, amps, mics, outboard), some of which is hard to specifically date, and I have one mic, a Hammond C2, and a few compressors that were designed in the nineteen fifties, so they could be as old as fifty years. I think the xylorimba is the award-winner, though.

1963 Gibson LG-0 acoustic guitar
1977 Fender Super Reverb
Magnasync Movieola URS (1960s? 1970s?) - still need to mod this, anyone know how to date these?
Late 1970s Mutron Phaser II
Block Logo Phase 100 and Phase 90 from around the year that they changed over from Script Logo (1979-1982?) - Both sound amazing.
1988 Dunlop Crybaby (cold busted! I smell a repair/mod)
1984 Sequential Circuits SIXTRAK (Prophet 610)

It's hard to say... maybe the RCA Varacoustic ribbon mic, or an Amperite ribbon.
