Royer Tube Mic Mod

Post by vinnie411 » Tue Aug 22, 2006 8:57 am

Hey I just completed the mic mod for the Marshall and I am AMAZED at how good it sounds. Has anyone else heard anything about these?

I modded one a few months ago and have used it a few times on vocals. Sounds great. Well worth the time and money.

I've yet to try modding my MXL 603. I'll probably just replace the caps and not bother with the tube mod for that one.

I agree. I wanted to try it but I can't find anyone to tell me if it would be worth my while.

Did you source the parts or find a kit? I haven't seen the kits around for a long time. If you sourced the parts, what were your final costs? Do you have a parst list that you would be willing to share?

Thanks
Kyle

It was around $60 for the parts and shipping. I got almost all of them thru mouser.com. The original article actually has mouser part numbers listed if I remember correctly. I can't find the scanned pdf files anymore, but I used to have them. They're on the net somewhere.

Additionally, I ended up swapping the 5840 tube for a 6205, based on a suggestion I read on another forum. I also opted for a cinemag transformer as it was about $20 cheaper than the jensen transformer listed in the article. I also recently removed the two innermost layers of windscreen material from the mic body. It seems to have opened up the sound a little bit.

Yeah, I just drew it out and chemically etched it at home. I had all that stuff anyway.

Found this after some searching:

http://www.diyfactory.com/projects/roye ... roject.htm

It has links to pdf files of the pcb layouts, as well as a scan of the original TO article.

I thought it had the parts list, but I guess not.

It should. The capsule is probably the same as the one in the MXL 2003, which many people prefer over the 2001. You're completely gutting the thing anyway and replacing all the electronics. Almost any large diaphragm condenser capsule will work with this mod.

sept/oct 2001 issue of tapeop.

That $60 doesn't include the transformer. I forgot about that. It will probably end up being around $110 including shipping to do the whole thing. Depends on what transformer you use. IIRC, the jensen is around $70 and the Cinemag is around $50.
