Fixing crappy limiting on live recording

Post by vmoney » Wed Sep 06, 2006 4:16 pm

Hi everyone --

So here's the scenario -- I recorded a live show of my band onto a Sony minidisc recorder with the included little stereo condensor mic. The recording turned out sounding pretty decent except that occasionally such as on loud drum hits, the crappy "Automatic Gain Control" kicks in which sounds like ass because suddenly everything ducks down for an instant until the limiter recovers causing nasty pumping.

I know it's probably a lost cause, but does anyone have any tips on how to minimize the pumping effect? I'll be editing this in Spark ME and I have the UAD-1 DSP card to play around with... Any other plugins I might like to know about?

Thanks!!!

Compressor. Longer attack/release than the pumping you are talking about. Stack another compressor with a faster attack, and a faster release, but WAY lower ratio. Both should be low ratio. Use your ears. Time out the comps so they sort of "ride over the bumps" that the little thingy made in the first place...
