Guitarists - ABY box questions and Squawk Box on the Way!

Post by T-rex » Fri Sep 08, 2006 12:44 pm

so I finally located a Moviola Squawk box and it should be shipping shortly. I will have to modify it or have it modified to accept 1/4 input but first a question.

I want to get a decent ABY box so I can record two amps simultaneously and I was looking at the Radial Big Shot (the $70 one) but then I found out that a Boss TU guitar tuner will run two amps at once. Anybody out there used it like this. Does it suck the tone (or just suck for that matter)? See, I don't have a decent tuner at the studio, what I use is the cheap danelectro one - which has always worked fine for me. But if for just a little more scratch than a decent ABY I can get a nice tuner that will also run two amps, I am all about it. Or are there any cheap ABY boxes that are decent?

My other option is record one at a time and reamp, but then I need a reamping box etc. so that is more cash etc.

I am open to any other suggestions too.

thanks

I, too, wonder about ABY/splitters. Anyone know where to find the Systematic Systems Splitter that Barresi used on the last Tool record?

Yes, the tuner will suck tone. I think the Radial box is your best bang for the buck box. The next best options are quite a bit more expensive. Those cheap $39 Proco ABY boxes suck tone (IMHO).

Another possibility: ZVex SHO- has dual outs, cool boost pedal to boot.

the radial may be the best bang for the buck as kayagum suggests. the best A/B/Y stompbox i've ever used is the framptone

for studio purposes, i would save some dough a buy a little labs pcp. what a fucking useful tool.

I use a A/B/Y pedal from Startouch Pedals.

Does not seem to suck tone and is built like a tank.

Thanks for the tips! I had a chance to check out my frineds boss tuner and I couldn't tell a noticeable difference in tone, especially when I could tweak the amps for recording. So I am going with that for now, as I need a decent tuner around the studio anyway.

Whenever I get the squawk box I will post some results. . .

Be careful, the Boss tuners do color the tone a bit. May or not play into what you're doing depending on the tone.

Never mind.....I checked one out at a local store and they buzz like a S.O.B!

Have to spend a little more $$ to get this job done right I guess
