double 002 failure: coincidence?

Post by kdownes » Mon Sep 11, 2006 2:31 pm

just posted this over at gear talk, but figured it might be better in this forum:

last week my 002 shut down. protools lost connection with it and that was that. i did some research on the DUC and found out about "the dreaded power harness" issue. wtf?

so i borrow a friend's to do a couple of sessions with over the weekend. first session went great. second session, not so great.

about an 3 hours into the second session protools lost connection with my friend's 002 and crashed. i could get this one to be recognized though, after restarting the computer, only to have it get lost and crash again!

i spoke to digi today and they are sending me replacement power harnesses.

does any one else have any experience with this?
doesnt it seem weird that it happened to 2 in less than a week?
can you think of anything that could have made this happen?
(other than digi's shoddy workmanship)

what a pain, id been so lucky as far as equipment failure until now.

I've had the dreaded power harness issue bite me twice with my 002. Apparently they didn't fix it all the way the first time.

The fact that it was two weeks apart with yours and your buddy's 002 suggests 3 possible explanations:

1) the units were manufactured about 2 weeks apart from one another
2) since the failures are humidity-based, it just got more humid in your town
3) dumb luck.

yeah, it can get humid here.
i live outside of dc, right next to the northwest branch, literally.
when it floods i dont have a yard any more.
this also happened as this last hurricane was bringing lots of
rain to the area, so this all makes sense.

What version software are you running?

I wonder if this isn't a software issue that hasn't been aknowledged by Digi yet. I have the same problem. However, Digi won't send me a power harness beacuse i have a Revision G 002-Rack. My rack has worked perfectly for a year. 15 days after my warranty expires, this problem cropped up on me.

I had my Digi-002 Rack packed away in a closet for 2 months. When I got it back out, I installed the Music Production Pack and the problems started. I don't know for sure that it's because of the software, but it seems suspicious.

So, that makes me wonder what version of PT and are you by any chance riunning the Music Production bundle? The fact that you had 2 Digi-002's go down on one computer makes it seem like a software issue.

Since you had a similar issue with 2 separate 002's.. odds are it's your FireWire card which is the problem. Which qualified FireWire card are you using?

Rail, I think your question is directed to the original poster, but I'll chime in anyway. I am using the onboard firewire of my ASUS K8V-SE motherboard. That is supposed to be supported.

I don't believe so -- you should check.. the Asus boards all used to use the VIA chipsets for their FireWire ports which is not supported. In Device Manager it should list the chipset as a TI chipset.

No, that is not a qualified port. It will work for yer firewire drive though. It does not work well for the 002r. Use/buy the correct firewire card only to avoid this crap.
pffft...the internet. Is that thing still around?

I put the new power harness into my friends unit and it worked! :)

I sent mine back to digi to get a new firewire card put into it.

I think that this was all just a coincidence.

Interesting. I built my machine based on those "Allenstein" machines on the DUC and I thought they suggested using the onboard Firewire. But it is definitely a VIA FW chip, not TI.
