On the Central Station I've got:

A- Event TR5's (hifi)
B- some speakers from a $100 Sony stereo (midfi)
C- the speakers built into my LCD screen (lofi)

It's good to check back and forth between them when getting sounds to see if you're too bassy, too trebly, etc.

I also have a boom box from about '81 and various other radios that I listen to using small FM transmitter. I plug in and listen to throughout the house or in my cars in the driveway.

I remote into my daw and take my wireless laptop around so I can play back/tweek.
Wonderful stuff. Got an FM xmtr myself that I should really hook up for that application.

And yeah, way for a company to lower their own bar... oh well, whatever makes them money/makes the bean counters happy, I suppose.

Not crappy, just cheap--Tascam VLS21, got 'em for $80. It's a powered sub with 2 small flat-panel satellite speakers. Don't know what the frequency response is but they have no business sounding as good as they do for this price. Very simple, just a power switch and volume control.

The flat-panels do away with the phase weirdness inherent to woof/tweet/passive crossover setups. Transition between lows/highs/mids is seamless, and there's good detail without being harsh. IME as long as the satellites are wider apart than my ears and the sub is close by the sweet spot is enormous, and stereo imaging is great.

If only I could mix in my car.
I have the best mix test car stereo ever.
I need to find some monitors that do the same thing.

I also have a Panasonic boombox that is run off a console output that is great for another reference. I set the eq on "classic rock".

Juster 95As. They sort of do for me what NS10s do. They aren't at all fun to listen on, but they really tell you a lot about what's going on balance-wise.

any of my friends cars and stereos that i can (my car only has am/fm), a sony shelf-top stereo that only has 3 presets (rock, jazz, and pop... they all sound kinda lousy), and the built-speakers on my girlfriends powerbook.

i also reference in a pair of really nice beyer headphones and a not-so-great pair of sony headphones.

Its usualy not the speakers in the car, but the acustics. There are a ton of articles out there, cars are not the most perfect space to listen to music in but thats where most ppl listen. Take some test tones out there and measure you will be blown away at the freqs missing and the ones reinforced.

I can get a pretty good balance by feeding my DAW into a small FM transmitter, then taking my wireless laptop out to my van/truck/car and use Remote desktop to remote to my DAW. Then I have full access to everthing. Beats the hell out of a tranzport!

I have a little sony boom box normalled to the studio monitor (not the CRM) knob.

Use it all the time. I get balances on it a lot. I have mixed a zillion things with that little, shitty, paint splattered thing!

Various and sundry car stereos, tiny laptop speakers, cheap PC speakers (considering this is where most people listen to music) and those iPod earbud things, and various other headphones.

The built-in speakers on the old imacs are pretty saucy.
