Question about "lunchbox"? Is this for real?

Post by Snarky » Fri Sep 29, 2006 12:31 am

Duders,
I'm looking for a new mic pre. This lunchbox thing is appealing and all, with all of its modularity.

Hey dudes, I've been UTFSE, and I kinda understand what is going on, I just wanted to confirm, that lotsa different manufactuers make pres, comps and eqs for these things.

So you could buy a 500 series lunchbox, and save up your pennies to get all kinds of different flavors? This sounds super sweet considering the fact that $500 or so comes and goes around here pretty quick. I could actually "work" my way up to something sweet instead of shelling out major $$$ all at once. If this is true, why doesn't every studio have an incomplete "lunchbox"? This is cool.

I think that is pretty neat if I am correct.
I'm going to go check more out.
Sorry if I've been living under a rock, but any help will help. Back to 1191 matches.

With all of the 500 form modules coming out now, a lunchbox is a great way to go. They can be a bit pricey though in the beginning (the lunchbox itself, not the modules), but over time it works out to be a good deal.

I have a 500 series rack from Old School Audio with a few different 500 compatible modules in it. OSA, Shadow Hills, Einsen Audio. It the rack I bring along with I record outside the house.

I just bought an API 10 space rack for the same reasons.
Nice way to get a lot of options.
I am going for a pair of those Purple Biz pre's first up.
I think it is funny that the 500 format was not adopted by more people before now.

The Avedis audio EQ's... they seem to be pretty bad ass.
The A-designs stuff is great.
The purple audio stuff is great...
The shadow hills stuff is great...

Oh, yeah, and API makes some stuff for the 500 series as well... ;)

Yes, at next weeks AES show, if you swing by my booth, you'll get a peek(and a listen) at the ShinyPre.

I'll second that. I have an OSA 11-spacer filled with MP1As, MP1Cs and MP1Ls and they are totally righteous. I HATE, I mean H-A-T-E recording drums onto ProTools. With this rack, I don't hate it as much (still cherish the times I get to slam tape tho... which is brought to nearly orgasmic proportions with the OSA stuff)

They also add a really nice dimension to bass and guitars too. I can't recommend them highly enough. I've also use a lot of the original API stuff and the one real difference I've noticed is the OSA modules are quieter. Haven't used the "new" APIs but I'm sure they are just as solid as the originals and as quiet as the OSAs since both would theoretically be using the same compnent-level quality.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

Yea, I read the Purple Audio Biz review right after posting. Duh!
Anyhoo, I think it is a great way to "save up" for some nice stuff.
I'm in, uh after I update my MAC OS, update to PT LE 7.whatever, get an additional SPDIF preamp, get my Digi 002 modified, get another 19" flatscreen, fix all these busted cables, buy some more mics, etc., etc, it never stops, does it???

I remember someone had this great signature on the old board that said, "I make hundreds of dollars a year doing this"..

That's way exciting, John. I'm loving the mics and look forward to whatever you are putting out there next for sure. Cheers,
Ryan
