nope, read my post. i sold the 388 because i wanted 15 IPS and more track width. the 388 is 7.5 IPS and width is equivalent to a 1" 24 track. The 3340S is 15 IPS and equivalent to a 1" 16 track.
The reason i'm thinking about going back is because of the ease of use of the 388 with the built in mixer and I don't even really know if I need 15 IPS and the track width. I'm recording Funk/Jazz kinda stuff so the extra low end might be nice.
I was asking if anyone thought i was crazy for thinking these thoughts or going back.

"Man crushed by nearly 30 year old recording behemoth"

btw- They are reliable once you get them up to spec. You just see a lot of problems posted here as people are trying to do just that, get an old unit up to spec. (yes, they are all old, I know) This thread and sweetbeats thread on homerecording have got to be the largest devoted to this beast on the net and so likely places to post a "how do I fix the xyz on my 388".
Good stuff!!!markjazzbassist wrote:after doing a 7.5 IPS to 15 IPS comparison today i was surprised that I actually like 7.5 IPS better. Way more character in the low end (i'm a bassist) and low mids. The highs are nice on 15 IPS but not worth the cost of the low end missing.
back to a 388 here i come!
Jack whites last album was recorded at 7.5ips on 2" 8 trk.

I recently purchased a 388. I couldn't get any playback so I took it to an engineering friend but he couldn't figure it out either (and said "There is no playback whatsoever electrically; mechanically it works fine. There is no output on the stereo outputs from either the recorder or any of the 8 inputs"). Any suggestions? Thanks

388!
Hey, yeah, I just recorded an album with my 388. I record vocals, drums, guitars, organs, piano and then do the rest (bass, backing vocals, whatever else), in Sonar. I like to think of myself in the Grandaddy, Sparklehorse, Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Daniel Johnston and Spiritualized family of musicians.
