Cheap Mic Deathmatch

Post by m_to_the_c » Mon Oct 16, 2006 12:36 pm

Now, I know a lot of people here are tiring of hearing the same old questions, but I figured I'd condense this all in to one big noob fyi.

Set-up: home studio

Use: detailed guitars, vocals, sparse drums

Budget: around $125

Mics: MXL V63M versus Behringer B-1

Which would you choose?

neither. If I had to choose one mic for <$125 I'd get the MXL V67G or 2nd choice would be the MXL2001. Either can be had for <$100.

Hmm. In a deathmatch you should consider only two factors: stabbing or bludgeoning.

In your price range, you may consider the Behringer ECM8000 a good buy as you can a stereo pair by using one in each hand like sais. You'd have to sharpen the tips a bit but if you go for the eyes in an X-Y pattern, it might work out.

But for a striking weapon, I'd go with MXL V57M as it is the most bat-like in the 100 dollar price range. Make sure you run it into your favorite tube compressor to maximize its "punchy" characteristics.

Hope that helped!

Neither.

I'd buy an AT 3035 from hollywood pro audio on ebay for $123. I purchased a 3035 from them several months ago for $135 and it was one of the best deals I've gotten online for a new mic.

I've had bad luck with Behringer's build quality, but MXL has always worked great.
