your (studio's) definitive smell

Post by phillyphife » Thu Oct 19, 2006 12:24 pm

not so loosely derived from another post -

some studios have such complex smells, like a fine wine, somelike the YMCA locker room, some like the Starship Enterprise - is there any relation to the scents and the sounds produced therein?

i'll start -

cat pee, mildew and cedar

Man, what an awesome thread. My favorite studio smells were at the recently-closed Jay Howard Production Audio, which smelled like old cedar and burlap, and the much older Arthur Smith studio, which smelled like even older cedar and burlap. Sunset Sound in LA has an interesting somewhat similar smell. The biggest smell-related thing I recall about Abbey Road is the guys from Stereophonic grilling red meat in the flat below us after we got mild food poisoning. Entirely unpleasant.

There used to be a hip-hop studio here in town located above a bagel factory. Mmmmmmm...fresh dough.

I used to work at a studio that was located on the second floor of a building above a fish market. Talk about smell...

I work in a studio called Motaland. Take a guess what it smells like.

I'd say that's accurate.

Tobacco, stale coffee, sour milk...

Occasionally, the studio I work at smells like tobacco, but more often than not, it smells like apple pie (thank you febreeze) or blackberry vanilla (thank you bath and body works.)

The blackberry vanilla smell has permanently been singed into my brain as being the smell of the studio.

The lounge smells like coffee.

My "studio", i.e., two rooms in deep reaches of the third floor of my house, smell like coffee, cats, and old house.

Lately, the signature smell of my music lair has been that burnt crayon smell of the G3 ibook keyboard.

my room gets the smell that a lot of old electronics have..you know exactly what I'm talking about if you have experienced it..like the smell inside the electronics bays of an old Ampex deck..I wonder what the hell that is?

It really smells great though..

my place smells like that and crack and PCP..
