Symetrix SX202 Mod

Post by dgrieser » Thu Oct 19, 2006 8:13 pm

I mainly record acoustic instruments, lots of mandolin family instruments to be exact. I've been happy with my EH12Ay7 on my mandolin. I have a 202 that has not been modified. Would I like this modded for what I'm recording or would a RNP be a better bet? Any ideas?

I'm all for improving gear, but I dunno.... I love the unmodded 202.

Is there something you don't like about the 202 as it is?

i've modded my sx202 and done some for other people. honestly i would only recommend the mod if you can do it yourself. the sx202 sounds pretty good stock, and the mod is a significant improvement. but if you have to pay someone else to do it, i don't really think the cost is worth it. it is more a case of the unit is good enough stock that the mod is only worthwhile if you can do it yourself. the difference is probably most noticeable on acoustic instruments.

I use stock and modded SX202s all the time, and the stock SX202 is one of my go-to amps on mandolin family instruments...

Love those things...

I guess I'll try it again. It just seemed a little harsh on the high end to my ear after I got the EH12ay7. Maybe it's my playing.

I haven't run a EH12Ay7, but what I like about an SX202 is the high-end detail....

Interesting.

I had 2 of these and modded them both. Of course I stopped after the first and did listening tests. The unmodded one was totally unacceptable for what I do.

I've since moved on to other DIY stuff but I was usually happy with the modded units in a variety of rock tracking roles. I guess YMMV

Guess I need to mod a few... :)

I don't know which end of a soldering iron to hold, so is there anyone out there doing this mod?

Thanks in advance...
