distant and distorted drums

Post by gutsofgold » Mon Oct 23, 2006 11:14 am

I was listening to a new cd I got (Damiera's M(Us)Ic) and I noticed one of the interlude/filler tracks had some cool drum tones.

They sounded very distant and distorted. I've heard this "effect" before so I'm hoping someone can catch on. For anyone who listens to Damiera it is track 9...the last 20 seconds.

How do I get this?

i haven't heard the track but it's real common these days to take one mic, just put it anywhere, and squash (compress) the bejeezus out of it.

Without hearing the track I'd agree on this method.

Maybe a room or distant mic (possibly squashed) and run through a sansamp. This is a pretty neat-o trick.

I've done this by bussing the whole drum mix (maybe minus the kick) to an 1176 on all mode and if you're using plugins in protools the digidesign "lo-fi" plug can do some cool stuff to drums. Also try the Antares Tube plug for more saturation. I have had lots of sucess making drums sound bad in a good way. If I could get them to sound good in a good way I'd be happier, but I'm an expert on making them suck.

I haven't heard the song, but I've gotten some pretty sick results that sound similar to what I think you mean, by using the pocket casette recorder trick from the Hugh Pool interview in Tape Op #52. Mount a handheld cassette recorder at a good even spot in front of the kit, set it into recording mode, and then take the output from the phones jack and D.I. it. The internal compressor can get you a really cool, overloaded, breathing sound. Maybe take this track and reamp it to get some distance to it if you need to.

If there's not a lot of snare stuff happening, sometimes a fast attack, slammed comp on the snare can be very cool.

put a mix across the room in a place that is bass/kick HEAVY then clip it in throu some chandlers or anything thats smooth and loud, but using a distressor is the easiest way to get this sound

I've been using the Nady ribbon and the BF76 plugin. The room is about 30 ft. long the drums are in front of a brick fireplace and the mic is about 10 feet from the wall at the other end.

It looks like Damiera are really taking off. My old band played with their old band, League, when they came through KC.

Cheap way = EV635 (or any cheap OMNI mic) - TubeMP in the red to taste on input, adjust output to not overload your coverter or whatever. I use this a lot as an "effect" track on the drums. Try it in the corner, behind the drummer somewhere.
Blah!
