Cheap ribbon mic for my piercing honkytonk vocals?

Post by honkyjonk » Sun Oct 29, 2006 3:53 pm

I want to try and find one of the cheaper ribbons and use it to smooth out my piercing honkytonk vocals a little bit.

Have any of you guys found any of these Nady/Apex/Shiny box dealios good for this sort of thing? If so, which one? I'm also thinking about older Oktava, maybe a cheaper Beyer. Hmmm. I don't know.

Anyway, which ribbons for vocals?

Or an SM7...

Yeah,

I know. But I really want a figure 8 mic so I can null the acoustic guitar while singing. This is half the reason for wanting a ribbon right now.

I have a Tape Op Group Buy ribbon and it did wonders for the really Geddy Lee like vocalst I used to work with. It took a shrill voice and gave it some character right out of the box and those go for really cheap now (the nady version etc.)

Beyer Dynamic M260... or 160. I'm really tempted to check out the Cascade Fat Head II or the Cascade 731R.

Hey guys,

Thanks. I'm getting an M160 for sure. I ran it through a bunch of tests at school the other day, and those things are amazing.

But I want to get a fig 8 ribbon too. Hmmm. Is there a single ribbon beyer that is fig. 8?

The Beyer m500 was designed to be a close (though not as close as a 58) stage mike and it would be my first thing to try. Don't worry TOO much about getting a figure of 8. If you end up with SM-7 or RE20 you can get pretty close to it and not end up with too much bleed. The m500 and m260 are designed to be hypercardiod but they lean towards figure of 8.

The shiny box ribbons are fantastic for all sorts of things. I have a pair of 46Ls that are a first choice on many things. I haven't tried them on vocals too often but the worked well when I did.

Okay,

I was cruising around and found this: http://www.fullcompass.com/product/314929.html

It's the same as the Tapeop group buy and Nady RSM-2 mics. But look at that price man! ($115) It's only $15 more than all you folks spent for the group buy. That's not too bad at all.

Anyway, I plan to put in a Cinemag, different caps etc. to make it as good as it can be. I ordered that and an M160 today from Full Compass.

Marc, I'd still like to come by and try that M130, and we can compare with the Apex when I get it all tweaked. Anyway, doesn't look like I'll be over in that area very soon though. But I'll let you know. Thanks guys.

Honky, I've got a Shinybox 23 that you could try out if you want to get together. I used it for male and female vocals and it's pretty brawny.

fullcompass has a killer deal on the Apex brand (typical chineese knock offs)
205 $85
210 $116

I got a 210 that I havn't tried yet.

I think I may go ahead and buy a cascade mics Fathead alos cuz it's cheap.
