what is the musical equivalent of Impressionism?

Post by logancircle » Mon Nov 06, 2006 12:36 pm

What is the musical equivalent of Image ?
Wikipedia says: "Characteristics of Impressionist painting include visible brushstrokes, light colors, open composition... ordinary subject matter, and unusual visual angles." I tend to think of it as a consciously distorted representation of something that has already been captured realistically (it's not only that, of course). Nirvana?

Jazz from the sixties. Rigid structure but the details are extemporaneous and chaotic.

FYI, check out www.naxos.com. It is a classical lable. For $20/year you can listen to anything in their catalog, which is extensive. I do web stuff for a day gig and listen to 40/hrs of music a week at work so this has been a great way to check out some classical stuff as I work. I'm diggin Charles Ives.

Cheers...

In modern band-driven music, anything ambient.

My Bloody Valentine? Brian Eno?
