Name that box !

Post by earth tones » Tue Nov 14, 2006 11:26 am

Hello.

Is anybody able to identify this device? It is the front end of an older tape machine, and it does not have any branding. I know these pictures aren't the most revealing, but I was hoping it would be an obvious identification for somebody. In handwriting there are some model numbers AN 577 and AM-801i, and it is serial number 4. There is also handwriting that states "July '68, but who knows what that denotes.

Not sure what it does? What I am hoping to do is mod is much like the Ampex 350/351 units that people have dedicated as mic preamps. I just bought it from a guy at work and have yet to experiment with it. It looks like it is missing fuses, so that is where I will start.

Where can I find info about Fairchild tape machine models?

Holy shit, that unit is heroic! Even if it transforms all sounds into turds, it is awesome.

Yeah...I personally have never seen a meter this large.

OK, is it just me or are those photos flipped horizontally? I can't read anything, but the meter is backwards, no?

Either they're flipped horizontally, or it's a compressor with two "no" switches!

I apologize for the bad photos, the only camera I have access to is my neighbors computer at work, which has a built-in iSight. Holding this heavy beast makes for trembling arms which yields blurry photos. Here are some close-ups, however they are of the same shaky-arm, iSight quality.

the weirdest thing about this unit thus far is that it has a male xlr for input and a female xlr for output. that doesn't make any sense.
