Post by contramark » Tue Nov 21, 2006 6:39 pm

i think this is one of the coolest sounding guitar recordings ever. anyone know who recorded this album and how it was done? im going to be tracking a band with this style at the end of the month and would love for some ambient style guitar sounds like these. any tips?

Ive had decent luck getting this sound by have the amp in my drum room against one wall, with a SDC halfway across the room, aiming at the opposite wall (away from the amp). Mix that with a close mic (but with the close mic really really low). It helps the vibe if this is done in the same room as the drums (but not while recording the drums, just in the same space).
As it was in the begining, so shall it be in the end...

Jason Lowenstein posts in here occasionally. I can't remember his user name, but if you start a new post with the title "Help me, Lowenstein!" you might manifest him. I remember him writing that he and Lou used PODs on their last tour.

Found it: his username is "wayout." Maybe you could PM him--seems like a nice guy. (I was spelling his name wrong--it's Loewenstein.)

Wow!
A sebadoh question!

Umm... Unfortunately it was too long ago for me to be able to answer the question with any precision...
Just had a listen and it is definately a Weston recording from Albini's old (in his house) studio...

Seems like you could get this sound (as previously suggested) by fooling around with room mic positions in a concrete floored space like albini's basement....

Im personally hearing two room mics with medium panning... not much of any close mics.

I think Westy still lurks on the electrical audio message board... so you might be able to ask him directly.

BTW... Sebadoh is reforming for a tour with original member Eric Gaffney for a tour in the spring of 2007!

Good luck with the sounds!

Jason,

Do you happen to remember what guitar/amp combo you & Lou might have used for that song/session? That is a beautiful sounding song.

Thanks,
Ryan

it's nice to see this being talked about...I also love that guitar sound on that song.
I love the 5 song EP sound that was out before the Bakesale album - some of those
songs are my favorites still. Lime Kiln! so cool. were most of those done by you
guys at home? any details of gear remembered? 4-track cassette?

great to hear about the reunion w/ gaffney. wow, that will be exciting for some
of us old folks. :)

seriously cool to hear from Jason on the board.

eric
