midrangey drum mics

Post by MoreSpaceEcho » Sat Nov 25, 2006 1:05 pm

hey,

so i really like the sound of my drums with just the bullet mic and a kick mic. but, the bullet mic is just too extreme a sound to really use for a whole song. anybody have any recommendations for some other really crunchy midrangey sounding mics that have at least some low end body to them? cheaper the better, naturally. thanks dudes.

Seems like many EV mic's can do what you're describing, and at4033's also have a sort of pinched, mid-rangey thing going.

Hmmm... I never got that from my 4033s.

What about a SM57. They're all about mid-range.

i love my 635a, and i also recently fell in love with the royer 122. try ribbons instead of just dynamics.

thanks guys. i bet the 635 would be ace. and i was thinking i should try the ol 57 as an overhead. i'm one of those who loathes the 57, so it never occurs to me to try it on anything. but i'll check it out when i get home tomorrow.

i tried an m160 and an at3060, and they were both alright, but still kinda too normal sounding...

dave nutz if you wanna post a clip that'd be great!

A 421 on the 'S' setting? And if that's too bright, put a thick sock over it!:)
he took a duck in the face at two and hundred fifty knots.

http://www.radio-valkyrie.com/ao/aoindex.htm - download the new record (free is an option!) or get it on CD.

I'll put in a vote for the 635A. I'll also throw in the Oktava ML52-2 and the Altec 633A. Also, check out some modern kick drum mics like the D112--spikey upper mid peak, but plently of low end, too.

no no no, the m160 is awesome. my favorite mic right now too. it just didn't sound messed up enough. i want the drums to sound like a grimey sample of a beat off an old record, that sorta thing. but i want to record it like that, i'm not interested in just piling a ton of EQ on a normal sounding mic. i just wanna do it with a kick mic and one other one somewhere...

ima tune the fuckers and try a 57 right now...
