That's not what I was after, I just didn't see "moderator" in your sig/av/whatnot anywhere, is all.

This thread is interesting because of the Reflection info. That's the "real"-est studio I ever did anything in, playing bass on about an album's worth of garage rock in the 90s with the Woggles.

I thought that console was an MCI 600 (I had a small one for a couple of years), but wasn't sure. We recorded some upright bass there for one track with what I think was a KM88 (haven't seen one since) that sounded good. The EMT plate was great, and the big room sounded good.

I think the "Moderator" tag only applies when a mod is posting in her/his forum.

Much thanks to Chris and Mitch Easter,

Mitch, we missed you in Tuscon. I hope to see you and Shalini in '07.

I can't wait to here your new record.

At some point early in the 90s, they put a Neve V3 in studio A. The console in B is a Sony 3000, which I though had replaced the MCI in A at some point between the two, but I could be wrong about that.

What cgarges said.

Don Gehman got a ton of deserved credit for the LRP drumsound. I remember when I said I wanted that sound on our record (back in '96), and the A&R lady knew exactly what I was talking about.

It makes a lot of sense though...that record was Jangle Pop's Loveless in a lot of ways...so much huger than anything before it...

Great stuff here. REM was a really big influence on me, growing up in the eighties. This is as cool to me as "what brand of cigarettes did Ringo use to dampen his snare" is to some.

Thanks

Thanks everyone! this has been an incredibly helpful (and entertaining) thread. Glad I asked. Chris!, you're a real wealth of knowledge... I'm gonna have to get a hold of the earlier records and give them a thorough listen. I've heard them before, but don't own them.

oddly enough, a couple of things that were done (as you wrote) were not too far from some of the ideas that i was tinkering with... so I'm on the right track.

Much appreciation!

-Alex

This is great information. I still love these records

Chris, thanks for going the extra mile and thanks to Mitch for sharing this information.

I think it's amazing that someone can ask an interesting question on this board and not only get a response, but get one directly form the source. So cool. TOMB is a priceless resource.

thanks all
Kyle

To all who posted:

Thanks so much for all the info. And Mr. Garges, a tip of the hat to you for going directly to the sources and getting the real story. Those first few REM albums are so important to me and it's so amazing to be even tangentially connected to the folks who had such a big part in making them so special. Thanks so much!

Happy New Year Everybody!

it has been years since i pulled out my early rem records

Not sure that's an official release, but it sure seems pretty comprehensive to me.

Apparently, Universal is about to put out a deluxe version of Murmur, remastered by Greg Calbi, which is quite good-sounding and also includes a disc of a live show from around that era.
